Maintenance Tips
Maintenance will keep your material handling systems running as smoothly as the day they were installed.
Regular maintenance can add years to the life of your material handling system
While Webb’s material handling systems are known for their durability, regular maintenance will keep them running as smoothly as the day they were installed. A little preventative attention can add years to the life of your material handling system.

Below are some tips that will keep your conveyer systems running smoothly in-between inspections:

Properly lubricate all moving parts - The equipment user needs to determine the best lubricating program based on production schedules, maintenance equipment and personnel. Operating conditions can also affect how often the conveyor needs to be lubricated. Be careful - over lubrication can be just as detrimental as under lubrication.

Lubricating the conveyor chain – The conveyor chain should be lubricated at drive on the slack chain side (exit end) to ensure lubricant reaches the bearing point of chain pin and side link.

Inspect your conveyor regularly – If your conveyor system is thoroughly inspected at least every three months, most problem areas will be detected while they are still minor issues, and major troubles will be significantly reduced. We provide our customers with a suggested checklist, which includes inspections suggestions for all chain components.

Keep a maintenance log – A log serves a historical record of any issues with your conveyor system. Items that should be included in your log: conveyor number, inspection date, result of inspection, parts replaced or repaired, cause of trouble and the name of the person who conducted the inspection.

Watch for sluggish wheels – Sluggish or frozen wheels must be removed immediately and thoroughly cleaned before they can be used again. The cost of new wheels can sometimes be less than the cost of cleaning.

Replacing chain parts – Chain parts that become bent should be replaced immediately. Do not attempt to straighten the bent parts.

Check for peening of flanges on vertical curves – This could be a result of excessive chain tension. To resolve the issue, simply adjust the chain pull tension.

Test chain tensions – The Jervis B. Webb Company provides strain gauge testing analysis to identify potential troubles areas with your conveyor system and reveal conditions that may shorten the service life and fatigue life of major components. Testing is performed by replacing a standard center link in the conveyor chain with an instrumented link that will record chain tension during production.
